Back in....hell, I can't remember... I went to Japan.
We hosted a foreign exchange student in the late 90's... she was from Japan. My son moved to Japan some years ago so we went to visit - and while there we visited with Kaai, our foreign exchange student.
Kaai and her husband took us to Kabuki-za, a theater in Japan... long tradition, must see for tourists.
couldn't understand a single word spoken, obviously, but Japanese theater doesn't really only on dialogue.. so I was entertained. Sometime into the performance there was a break in the action, curtains came down.... using my nearly Sherlock capable powers of deduction I deduced - 'Intermission'. Ahhhhhh, but this was to be different.
I sat back in my seat, stretched my legs.... then turned to Kaai with a question. "Kaai, where did your husband go, he missed the end of the 1st act". Kaai replied, "Oh he's seen it many times. He went to get us dinner".
Ok.. that confused me. But not for long... I had barely asked the question when I saw Kaai's husband returning... with 4 bamboo boxes. Turned out not to be bamboo, only styrofoam, made to look like bamboo. (I was very disappointed)... and inside the boxes?
Dinner. Typical Japanese food so I can't tell you what it was except fish was involved. It was delicious. Soon everyone around me had a fake bamboo box and we're all in our seats eating dinner. Or maybe it was lunch. Kaai's husband had anticipated the rush to the food server, wherever that was, so we were the first to dine.
So what's my point? Cost me about, rough guess... $8,000 for my wife and I to go to Japan.. (long stay, over a month)... and now you're telling me I could have had that same experience in Tulare? Tulare, as in a little over an hour from my house and maybe $5 of gas money?
