Yeah, I'm familiar with the method of transporting animals you mentioned.. We almost used that method to get our latest Beagle, who ha been paralyzed in South Carolina, but given surgery by a local shelter and can now walk.. I decided to fly to Atlanta to pick her up, instead, since she'd been through so much already.. So, the shelter arranged for a guy to drive her 200 miles to Atlanta, then we met him at the airport and got the dog..
But for her to go get a dog in a bad part of town unarmed...? She's a saint!
We've done similar things, but not as dramatic.. we just drove around in bad neighborhoods looking for dogs who had no shelter during freezing weather conditions.. We dropped doff hay, crates, and gave them new collars and food/water bowls etc and trie dot educate them on why dogs need shelter in 10 degree weather.. We didn't confiscate any dogs, tho - that's a whole different ballgame!
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
