it was 6 back then.... civil war days.
I was actually released early as they were phasing down with Viet Nam coming to an end.... and spent a year in the Army Reserves after active service. We didn't get along well with Reservists, AT ALL.
Gotta tell you a short story... about my very last day in uniform... (in the Army Reserves). Had an E-7... Sgt. Martinez, a bigger ego and jerk never existed... I came out of active as an E-5. Sgt. Martinez had never served active. He thought he was a GOD. So my very last day.... was at a the summer 'camp' that all reservists attended for two weeks every year. During this one... they were going to send us through the 'gas'... CS and Mustard. I had gone through this so many times when active I had lost count.
So my turn came up... and I informed Sgt. Martinez, "This is my last day in uniform... and I'm not going through that gas shack. You can try to force me but if you do then me and you are going to have a discussion about it"... my intent was not subtle. He hated me. He hated all active personnel that came into the reserves, (there were a lot of us). I wasn't kidding around, he knew it... walked away... I didn't go through the gas.
Saw him some ten years later and here's my favorite part... it was NOT "ah the old days, all is forgiven"... he still hated me and I him.
