If your brother in law uses putes for his gaming then he's already far and above my skill or tech level. I'm strictly a console game user, Xbox One, always have been and at this point in time I doubt I change.
I only do limited genre types, racing games are my first favorite ( NASCAR games namely ) and FPS shooters (Battlefield titles) as my second pref. Once in a while I stray off to another type of game but only for a break then it's back to my Hardcore gaming commitments.

I would go out on a limb and say you're right to at least an extent, gaming is an addiction but what can I say. IMO it's better then going out and spending money on a quick fix interest or things like traveling (not a bad thing to do I just don't have the urge).
For me gaming (especially now with my reflexes tanking compared to the younger gamers) I do for fun, no other reason other than because I just enjoy it, have since Pong
