"Travel Leagues" is universal or perhaps it's local colloquialism. I know they are referred to that way over all the parts of Ca. I have been to.. which is most of the state.
Teams are formed in which the players dedicate themselves to that one team, (sport), year round. They don't stop playing.. no breaks - spring, summer, fall, and winter they play with that team. Lot of practice games but it's almost exclusively, (could be wrong about this point), tournaments.
Nearly all the travel leagues I know of are 'baseball' teams.. but I know there are soccer travel leagues, and much rarer basketball leagues. Perhaps other sports as well.
Probably the biggest reason these leagues are starting to get some negative attention is they were playing some youth pitchers year round and arm problems got out of hand. But even beyond that some 'pros' got involved and are now putting out lots of video, website information sites, calling for allowing kids to play all sports, especially when they're very young, pre-high school. - JamesJM
