Trading or cutting Gurley before the new CBA would have been prohibitive because until the new CBA was signed, there was no June 1 option.
Once the new CBA was voted in there was suddenly a June 1st option again.
Without the June 1st option for Gurley are least, cutting or trading them both would have been complete cap disaster. The hit would have been too high.
The June 1st option at least partially addresses that, making it much more do-able.
So the people who were saying earlier on it would have cost too much were right--until the June 1 option kicked in with the new CBA, it was too much.
...
Makes sense zn but the CBA was always in play even though it was not voted and agreed on prior to predictions.
Even still... The Rams could've cut Gurley regardless of the CBA and Cooks got traded for more than a bag of chips.
I get your point and you would be a good attorney defending the populous..
Go Rams!!!
Never doubt the McVay and Snead era...
They don't sit on their hands regardless of draft capitol and salary cap.
No people were not aware that with the CBA expired there was no June 1 option. And it is simply true that until that option existed the cost of cutting him would have been far too much.
As for Snead/McVay doubt, that's a mixed bag on this issue. They traded for Cooks and signed him to a top 2nd contract, then 2 years later unload him. They signed Gurley to a huge deal, then a year later unload him. Those are the actions of people who are learning from mistakes, which is not the same as already knowing what you're doing.
And so saying they don't sit on their hands because of draft capital is ironic, since they themselves are the reason they don't have draft capital. And saying they act regardless of cap space is equally ironic, since they're the ones who set up the cap space issues.
I like the Snead/McVay era but I don't think that every move they make is proof of genius. I think some moves they make are proof that they are learning some things the hard way.
