the 1000 yards we've become accustomed to may be a thing of the past. He probably won't be a game breaker the way he was either. It's unlikely he'll justify his salary and that's just a bitter pill we're going to have to swallow.
But this last season he almost hit 100 yards a couple of times and averaged 3.8 per carry for 857 rushing yards. With (hopefully) an improved line, and likely more carries split with the other backs, is 750-800 yards and maybe 24 receptions too much to expect?
I generally don't do bitter pill things with contracts. Though I get what you're saying.
To me? Injuries happen.
I am never going to let dark emotions color what I see on the field, and maybe not with you, but with a lot of guys, contract judgments do that. They can't see what a guy is doing, they instead do armchair calculations about how much what he's doing costs. I am just never going to go down that path. When contract time is over and it's time to play, I just watch how they play.
I take Gurley for what he is and what he does and when he's productive there's nothing bitter about it for me.
I agree with the part I bolded. Yes that's seems reasonable and fair. With OL improvement he can probably get more than 1000 rushing and receiving.
He's smart, instinctive, tough, with good vision and some straightline speed. That's not the old Gurley but it's a productive, good NFL back.
