I know I wouldn't know that just from watching the tape. The author, however, seems to know. I think this is some insight into his background: "... concepts from the old Jeff Tedford Cal offense that I picked up back in the day," Tedford was the head coach at California from 2002 thru 2012 and the article is posted on Cal's site. Just connecting the dots it appears that the author learned stuff from Tedford. (Note: Goff played at California 2013 thru 2015)
Unfortunately the author only identifies himself as HydroTech so I can't research his credentials.
Bottom line, though, even if HydroTech doesn't know what he's talking about the fact remains that we as fans still don't know. We see Cooks is open. Is he a decoy? Is the the 4th receiver in the progression. We don't know ... so it seems to me that criticizing Goff for 'missing a wide open Cooks' is an uninformed opinion.
The author ACTS LIKE he knows. I think he may even BELIEVE he knows. We have no reason beyond that to assume that he "seems to know." Knowing the old Cal offense doesn't qualify him to make that call.
And I don't agree with your last comment. Whether or not Cooks is a "decoy" is an interesting issue...first off we don't even know if the McV offense deliberately uses decoys. That is, hey Jared no matter what Cooks does, he's not a real option on this play.
Look at what the Rams said they were working on with the offense this year in OTAs and camp. Recognizing post-snap options more quickly, and going through progressions more quickly, especially against unexpected post-snap defensive looks.
Given that, the Rams seem to think the passing game last year, against top defenses, did not adjust quickly enough or go through progressions quickly enough. Which is not surprising with a third year qb.
Meanwhile this guy is telling us that Cooks was a pure decoy so he doesn't count? To me that sounds dangerously like a fan-apologist type who is trying to erase the very things the Rams themselves say they have to improve on.
The guy cannot possibly know some of the things he claims to know. Or believes he knows.
