He needs to show me how he carries a team. He needs to show me a great 2 minute offense QB. He needs to show me more 4th quarter "put a dagger in them" drives.
You sign a starter up for a 2nd contract at amount that either matches or comes close to the annual market amount for that position.
If you try to sign him for less, the player simply goes "okay I;ll sign with someone else then."
With 2nd contracts for starters it is really this and this only---if you want to keep him you sign him for the market amount, and if you don't want to sign him for the market amount you don't keep him. It;s one or the other.
Contrary to a popular "hard to kill" myth, 2nd contracts are not about what we think the player is "worth." It has nothing to do with that.
If you want to keep him as the starter, you sign him for that year's market amount---if you don't want to sign him for that, someone else will.
