So, after 2016 and when McVay got him, what state would you say Goff was in? Was he playing like a franchise QB?
Personally, I never doubted him. The circumstances were not very good (if nothing else, no running game...and if memory serves, the 2017 Rams ran play action more than anyone, and of course you can't run play action without a running threat). On top of it Air Raid college offense qbs are notoriously underprepared for the pros. Only 3 have done anything so far across 2 decades (counting Goff after 2017 as the 3rd) and none of the 3 had a solid rookie year. But I think college also showed what he was and I think that's all translating over, and there were even hints of it in 2016, in spite of the situation.
Not sure how one could "never" doubt a prospect. Having faith that a guy will work out in the long run is one thing but I think Goff provided enough examples to warrant a little doubt.
With McVay guiding him, now that I'm sold on what kind of coach he is, I think Goff's potential future is very bright. But I still have doubts. If Gurley goes down, I'm not sold that Goff will step up and carry a pass-first, everything on his shoulders offense. I don't think McVay would put him in that spot but sometimes a team is forced into it. Could Goff be like Brees and carry an offense? I just don't know at this stage. But, just as Brees benefited from having a good running game and balanced offense around him last year, there's no reason to think Goff won't do the same.
And, the biggest proverbial ace still up Goff's sleeve is how young he is. I expect improvement and continued growth from him as he puts on an NFL body. But I still don't have the confidence in him that I have in McVay to succeed with whatever situation he's put into. Put Goff into a less than ideal situation and I don't know that he emerges as a top player. Put McVay on a shaky team and I'm a lot more confident that he can turn it into a winner.
