For all the talk from McVay about adjusting the system to fit the players, it seems apparent that it’s not the case. Perhaps if it were necessary then perhaps it would be different. I have only watched McVay for a year so I am sure I am drawing inaccurate conclusions.
But it seems to me that the system rewards route runners. Not Austins’ or Watkins’. Based on last season it would seem a better move to sign a Bruce type for the amount Watkins would command. I would also just rather not see good players “disappoint”, as another poster put it, and have to hear about it all year. Smh.
Jaimie Duncan!!!! Jeez. I see the Fletcher/Watkins comparisons but I think Fletcher would have still succeeded whereas Watkins is just misplaced. Maybe. Janie Duncan was just terrible. I am not advocating signing a terrible player. But based on how system heavy the desired traits are, it seems a better use of $$$ to go after a fit than a player who would be better used in a different system.
Also the Rams needed Fletcher... they absolutely do not seem to need Watkins.
