I agree with a lot of what you say. But honestly, if they sign Donald, Joyner, and Watkins, I don't see much $$$ left over for FAs.

...

I'm sure you know, since I've seen you mention this to others before, that money can be put in any number of years for cap accounting purposes.

If they sign the three you mention, there may not be a huge cap hit in 2018. So it's possible that they could have plenty of money left over for FAs.

The other thing is, what if they release Tavon, Quinn, and Barron? There's the possibility that AD doesn't sign an extension. They have ways to free up money, they have lots of options.

They were much more active in FA than anyone expected last year. You could be right that they're not very active this year but my guess is that they once again surprise with their activity level.

This is just an opinion obviously but I don't see them releasing all 3 of those guys.

I mean who really knows yet, and we;ll see, but, why cut your LBs in half.

In terms of the cap space, yes they can put big 2nd year cap hits in 2019. But there's still a big payout for 2018 for the 3 I named,. plus the draft picks, plus Sullivan, McQuaide , Robey-Coleman, Longacre, Troy Hill, Darrell Williams, Malcolm Brown, maybe even Walker. (Not saying they will keep every one of those guys but then again that's not even the full list).

I just don't think they will have a lot of space. They won't be strapped, but I don't think they can afford a high market outside FA.

....

On the question of why cut your LB's in half? Because they really weren't very good this year. The LB's may have been the weakest unit on the team.

Of course none of us really know. I was trying to point out that when a new staff comes in - and Wade has been no exception - is that there is typically some upheaval from year 1 to year 2.

That said, I doubt they cut both too. My guess is, one is cut and one is kept.

Most of the players you list are either RFAs, ERFAs, older vets, or positions that will not require lots of cap dollars. I'm sure several won't be brought back and will be replaced with UDFAs.

But beyond that, why assume the team will prioritize those players over outside free agents? Last year no one thought they would spring for one of the top free agents in Whit. I'm guess I'm challenging a common notion that they'll prefer status quo over outside FAs.

Again no one knows and we all will eventually see... I'm just providing food for thought.

Quinn came on at the end of the year and they may believe he can continue.

I am not sure Barron is a problem in himself. If they see him as one then he might be gone. I think the issue had to do more with NT.

Either way what I said was they weren't going to cut all 3 (RQ, MB, TA).

I listed 2 RFAs. The rest are UFAs and ERFAs. They still have to be paid. I knew which category they were when I listed them. My point was, they are not going to let all those guys go, and lots of little deals like that add up.

Honestly, the way it looks to me, it's a pipe dream to expect a FA bounty every year, especially since that cuts back on future cap space as they approach a time when they will have to absorb big hits for both Donald and Goff.

But then I don't know what they will do.

I am just saying that adding everything up, one clear possibility is that they could focus all their cap resources on their own guys, without adding any high market FAs. And that's even with using big future cap hits for the high-end FAs like Donald & co.

...

Agree on Quinn.

Agree on the issue being more NT rather than Barron.

Agree on them not cutting all three.

Agree on them not letting all those 8 names you list go.

One would think you've forgotten which thread you're posting in or didn't read the original post. Lol. All of this stuff you're saying, I already said in the first post.

I suggested that Quinn would be kept, that 6 of the 8 names you list would be retained, and listed the amounts it would take for the RFAs and ERFAs.

I don't think anyone is proposing a free agent bounty every year. I'm just making an argument for why we could see one this year.

If you notice, on several of the free agents and the proposed contracts I advocate they pick up are short term deals and will expire before a Goff extension would kick in.

Via Overthecap's calculator one can create contracts for every free agent, give extensions, and sign outside free agents. In my proposal here, I had already given Donald an extension and planned for extensions for Goff and Gurley.

We both agree that we don't know what they're going to do.

What I'm saying is, I actually DID add everything up and feel that if they focused on their own they'd still have money available to spend on outside FAs. Now whether the team chooses to go that route or not? Who knows...
