What should Goff work on the most in the off season?

January 13, 2018 07:11AM
What aspect of his game needs to be a focus of his off season program? McVay alluded to the fact that together he and Goff would break down his play and decide where Goff needs to work on his game for the 2018 season.

From my armchair, I see 2 areas.
1) Better footwork and body control when rolling out/escaping the pocket to the right or left in order to improve accuracy.
2) Develop a little more overall strength and use that strength in conjunction with learning when and how to run when the opportunity presents itself.

The first thing involves technique.
The second thing involves strength training and development of a mindset and "instinct".

He has the co-ordination and arm to be far better on his rollout passes than he currently is. I think it is something he just didn't do in college and man he looks awkward doing it in the Pros. There's no telling where the ball will go, and there's no reason he can't be better at it.

He is a much better athlete than I had realized. He should certainly not run as much as Dak Prescott for example, or (heaven forbid!) even half as much as Russell Wilson. But, somewhat like Rogers (although Rogers is an even better athlete than Goff) he needs to recognize when he has a great opportunity to pick up the needed yards on a 3rd down by running when the field opens up for him. He left WAY too many opportunities like that on the table this year, including in the WC game against Atlanta.

I realize that the running aspect is a fine line. He shouldn't run too much and he shouldn't "fight for yards" when running. Rather he should take what they give him and settle for a bit less in order to avoid any legal hits.

I don't want him to lose the pure pocket passer orientation he has; but he also shouldn't be oblivious to wide open running lanes that would allow a series to continue.
