The apparent effectiveness of an offensive line is highly dependent upon the effectiveness of the entire offense. When an offense is impotent and predictable, the opposing defense can often see what is coming and can afford to take risks. It's hard for an offensive line to build confidence in such a situation. If the defense is able to stack against the run, it is difficult for an offensive line to open holes. When a team gets behind, the defense can tee off against the QB. It is difficult for an offensive line to protect the QB under those conditions. The Rams had a historically bad offense in recent years. It is impossible for an offensive line to build confidence and develop under those conditions, which cause players to press and commit penalties. If the offense starts to improve under the new regime, it is likely that the offensive line will improve along with it.
