I just don't buy the penalties stuff. Unless there's data about returns called back around the league we can look at.
Since he came into the league, out of 30 players with 50+ punt returns, he's 21st. In the past two years, out of 15 players with 40+ returns, he's 12th (just 7.7 yards/return).
In Rams team history, out of 15 players with 60+ career punt returns, he's 12th. He is not in Hakim, Ellard, Irvin, or even Kennison or Amendola's class.
He should at least be in the top half of these lists and he's not. Maybe he can be better. But it's not going to be from fewer penalties. It would be from him getting upfield vs. dancing and high-stepping in place like a Riverdance performer.
With TA as a PR you get lower yardage overall on returns but you also get scores.
That's fine with me. Since 2013 Austin has scored on 3 punt returns. The only one with more over the same period is Sproles with 4. Then, also across the same period, Antonio Brown and Marcus Sherels have 3 each.
That's it for 3 or more TDs on PRs from 2013 on. Sproles with 4, then Austin tied with 2 others for 2nd, with 3.
I don't know how many different guys had 20 or more returns since 2013. Must be more than 100 though. So that's tied for 2nd out of a lot more than 100 qualifiers.
