A lot of this comes down to how you define "addiction".
I've got plenty of anecdotal evidence of friends who would have what I classify as an addiction problem with pot.
Look, I'm ALL for legalization of marijuana, but even I can see that people can still abuse it and become addicted or dependent.
And another poster who claims that methamphetamine is not physically addictive....WRONG!!! Sorry, but that's just not right at ALL.
And how I define addiction is physical/biochemical dependence.
The entire "mental addiction" thing is vague and way too variable. That is, let's say a certain percentage of people are "mentally" addicted to marijuana. I see no conclusive evidence that it is the marijuana that causes it. It makes as much sense to say that the same people have a tendency toward emotional/mental fixation that could lead to something else grabbing them (like say soda).
So there's nothing definitive enough for me to leap to any conclusions about it.
I have known people in my life who were addicted to various things, including opiates and alcohol. I myself am heavily dependent on caffeine...and caffeine is known to cause mild physical dependence (though it's not dangerous to me, the way I handle it.) But never marijuana, that I know of. Never seen it or heard of it.
My wife worked for a rehab clinic for quite a while. She has never heard of anyone checking into rehab for marijuana and when I directly asked her (just now) if marijuana is physically/biochemically addictive she just flat said no.
