The defense looks just fine. i am very encouraged by what I'm seeing out of Ogletree now. He's bringing the wood, moving fast, and he's vocal out there. If Gaines can stay on the field our corners will be good enough and the D will wreak havoc on a lot of offenses. The FS position is still a concern, hopefully they get that worked out, but they are fine at SS. You can mask a lot of problems on the back end with a great front 7.
The defense did look good. Denver wanted to work on the run. The Rams needed to work on their run defense and the Rams stuffed it. No worries about the pass rush of course but again the secondary looked leaky. FS is my biggest concern if Cody Davis is starting and he has the last two weeks then yes that is a major hole. TJ made a nice play near the goal line that was intercepted by Davis. Nice play by him and good job by Cody for hanging on to the ball... although it didn't appear to be a clean int to me
I thought Goff made some nice throws, and we all know about the drop epidemic, his supporting cast last night was awful but he needs to see things quicker. I'm not down on him at all. I thought Lynch looked bland, all he did was dink and dunk so they are keeping it extremely simple for him. And he had much better WRs to throw to than Goff.
I thought Goff was unimpressive - drops aside. He looks slow and clumsy and once again got banged up really good on a tough hit. He bounced up and finished the series but they sat him for the next one. I think his shoulder injury was worsened by the hit last night. Obviously the backup oline struggled and that impacted his play but in general he hasn't flashed nearly enough IMO for the 1st overall pick in the draft. Obviously we won't be seeing him anytime soon unless Keenum is injured. I think some folks are trying to gloss over it but Goff's performance is a disappointment.
GRob played well again before he came out due to concussion checkout, thankfully he's fine. The starting OL looked good to me. Obviously, the backups will make it easier to make some cuts this week. Tavon got one target, not sure why, but I don't care.
The oline was OK but you're right it was Denver - They seemed to get better as the half went on. The first two series we saw Brown whiff on Miller and the second series ended when Miller went unblocked by a TE and Keenum had to get rid of the ball too early.
Case is Case. No zip on the ball, limited ability but a gamer who won't lose the game all by himself, but won't put pressure on a defense. He's actually perfect for a Fisher scheme offense. More on that later.
I am starting to believe this whole Fisher thing and philosophy is a myth. He doesn't want to be limited but time and time again he is forced to. Goff not asserting himself simply means that in terms of vertical passing they won't be as good as they probably could be. Keenum played well again. Lets just say it.. he played well. I would like to see the Rams throw the ball into the end zone when they get close. Go for the jugular.
I think we should all keep in mind how good Denver's D is, they made many great offenses look bad last year, plus they were playing at home in their dress rehearsal evidenced by the way Talib hit Keenum on the sideline. They were bringing the mustard, just as the Rams D was and I thought our starting D matched them or even bettered them.
agreed... although I would not have given the defense the night off so early and I would have kept the starters in when Goff entered the game as well... Oh well so much for what I would do <shrug>
All this doesn't change the fact that the Rams offense is insipid and uninspiring. You know whats coming and it rarely looks sharp. Fisher is gonna pound the ball with Gurley and company and use the receivers as secondary weapons to try to keep the defense honest, hopefully limiting them to only 10 in the box.
Personally, I think the offensive philosophy and scheme that Fisher wants is a losing one over the long haul, it just doesn't put enough pressure on defenses, so he will always be resigned to depending on his defense to play extremely well. And that's just not going to happen over 16 weeks. That's the reason I see at best a mediocre season. He may get to 8-8, but more likely its another losing season.
It's really sad because I think with just 2 changes this team can have a winning season. 1) A modern offensive scheme and 2) a quality WR. Yes, that means I'm ok with Case starting for now and Goff being eased into the starting role. They could still win with that if they made those 2 changes.
Disagree on the insipid and uninspiring - IMO that's over the top. You talked about all the drops... what if those drops are catches...are we talking about an uninspiring system? I love how the Rams starters moved the ball against the Broncos starters and how they got stronger. I don't love how they finished with FGs. Lance Kendrick's looked very strong last night. He ran a nice little drag route last night for a big gainer and of course Keenum hit him in stride over the middle for another long yarder. The Rams are doing some very interesting things with their TEs in the pass game.
Regarding wins this season - I agree the Rams look like another 7 at best 8 win team. The defense will play well most of the time, the should have a dynamic running attack and they look like they are doing some zone read stuff as well, TEs will be very active and oline coming on - That being said I think Fisher is not a good coach. There is no way in hell Goff should not look more prepared than he does. The Denver announcers last night said if the Rams can just get good play from the QB position not great just good... they can be an 11-5. Well I have been saying that as well... if the Vikings can go 11-5 and win a division with Bridgewater throwing for 14td and 9ints then its seems logical that the Rams a team similarly configured should be able to do the same. That being said IMO the Rams don't have the coaching that the Vikings have. 7-9 it is boys... unfortuantely
If they fired Fisher tomorrow, and made those 2 changes, I'd feel a whole lot better about the Rams.
