For me, 2018 is the true test for Goff, McVay and the Rams

February 09, 2018 05:20AM
Let me say up front: I'm buying the Rams.

That said; I'm not so naive as to believe that there is no chance that the Rams are 1 year wonders who caught the league by surprise.

So for me, 2018 is a true test to see if Goff really is a 100 QB rating QB. If the Offense really can score 30 ppg. If McVay really is the genius he's being given credit for.

If the Rams can get 11 wins again in 2018, keep the scoring average up, and keep up a wide scoring differential, then they are going to be a perennial Super Bowl contender for years to come.

My hope is that they will be better all around, deeper, and get at least to the NFC finals this next year. But it is hard to sustain such major leaps forward that we saw in 2017. I think they will be better because the players will have had a full year in the new systems. Snead and McVay will have identified what personnel changes they need to better fit the vision and systems. The rooks and 2nd year guys will have had time to develop. And McVay will improve some of his play calling and general handling of being an HC.

However, we can't discount the loss of LeFleur and Olson. And we've yet to know who we're going to lose to FA and/or salary cap issues. The mantra is "we can't keep everybody". Frankly, I don't know if we can or if we even want to. Some here who are more cap knowledgeable than I say that the Rams have enough cap to keep everyone they want to keep. We'll see.

I do think that after this successful year and with the charisma and confidence and "hipness" that McVay exudes, there are likely some FA vets who might come aboard who wouldn't have before.
