Lost Films

Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation claims that "half of all American films made before 1950 and over 90% of films made before 1929 are lost forever".

But I've started to notice that more recent films are starting to disappear. When VHS first came out pretty much every film that still existed was released on VHS. However when DVD's started to replace VHS, films that were deemed not popular enough were never released on DVD. There are a number of films I can't get on DVD and never stream anywhere. The point I'm trying to make is that I know of dozens of films I'd like to watch again but they never stream and and only be found on DVD. So when DVD's go be the wayside will all these films also be lost forever?

Wasn't there a fire that destroyed a LOT of works somewhere in California?
