When the Rams lost Super Bowl XIV I was in 3rd grade. I'd only been following the Rams for two full seasons by then but was a huge fan of the team and a huge fan of him- as was everyone in my mostly Italian family. My mother used to call him "a nice Italian boy." I was sad for them losing, crushed when he left the NFL for the CFL in 1981 and thrilled when he returned a year later.
Anyway, after they lost that Super Bowl I wanted to write him a condolence letter. Being early 1980 there was no way to easily find a mailing address. So my Dad called up the local CBS affiliate sports anchor one day. Because you could just do that in 1980. Asked him if he could find a Rams team address and he found it for us. So I mailed the letter.
About 2-3 months went by and one day a manila envelope shows up in the mail for me. Opened it and this was inside.
You can imagine as a not quite 10-year old how thrilled I was. Brought it to school the next day to show my friends. Bought this frame for it where it sat on my bedroom shelf the rest of my youth. And now 44 years later it's still on the shelf in my office.
