As it stands right now, the Los Angeles Rams don’t feel they have a backup quarterback on the roster. Sean McVay said as much last week, once again raising questions about whether Stetson Bennett will ever play for the team again.

Bennett missed his entire rookie season while on the non-football illness list and it sounds like the Rams haven’t been in contact with him in some time. It’s certainly not an ideal situation after the team spent a fourth-round pick on Bennett last April, a pick that looks like they’ll get nothing out of.

Rams COO Kevin Demoff made it clear that the Rams will still be open to drafting a quarterback this year despite spending a fourth-rounder on Bennett a year ago.

“I don’t think that that would discourage us from taking another swing at a quarterback prospect but it has to be the right one,” Demoff said, via the Orange County Register. “When you walk in thinking you need it is when you make mistakes.”

The Rams can easily solve their backup quarterback position by re-signing Carson Wentz, who led the team to a win over the 49ers in Week 18. He’s a pending free agent but after getting no looks from other teams last season, it’s reasonable to think that Wentz won’t get substantial offers this offseason.

It’s also possible Bennett will get his career back on track and return to the Rams, though that seems unlikely based on the comments from McVay and others within the organization. One way or another, whether it’s in free agency or the draft, the Rams need to find someone to back up Matthew Stafford.
