Los Angeles Rams changed the course of their franchise when they hired a 30-year-old offensive coordinator from Washington in 2017. Sean McVay has since gone on to bring the Rams three NFC West divisional titles, two NFC championships, two Super Bowl appearances and Super Bowl victory, while becoming one of the most consistent coaches in the NFL since his arrival in Los Angeles. He has a winning record in five out of his first six years as a head coach, and is currently on pace to get his sixth out of seven this year.

That said, it’s not shocking that McVay now has a chance to tie, and potentially break a franchise record this season, that has stood since 1994. With a win on Sunday vs. the Giants, McVay would tie former Rams head coach Chuck Knox for second all-time in total wins with 69. McVay is also only six wins away from catching head coach John Robinson for the all-time franchise record, something he could get if the Rams were to potentially go on a major Super Bowl run this postseason.

McVay has impressed fans and critics alike this year, as preseason rankings had LA projected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. This was due to the fact that team’s roster was made up of almost half rookie players, and the team had no cap space for major free agent signings. They also were 5-12 in an injury-riddled 2022, and saw many veteran players leave via free agency or trade.

Somehow though, McVay still his team currently sitting in the sixth spot of the NFC Playoffs with an 8-7 record. Rookie WR Puka Nacua looks like the potential Offensive Rookie of the Year, and defensive draft picks Kobie Turner and Byron Young are at the top of almost every rookie stat category for the defensive line. Second-year running back Kyren Williams, who McVay believed could handle a starting role after not playing many meaningful snaps his rookie year, now is the Rams first 1,000 yard rusher since 2018.

McVay also wisely stuck by his QB Matthew Stafford, amid injuries and retirement rumors, when most had already written him off. Stafford now looks revitalized in McVay’s revamped offense, posting a passer rating of 93.0 with 3,648 yards, 23 touchdowns and only nine interceptions.

He’s helped make guys like CB Ahkello Witherspoon, LG Kevin Dotson and WR DeMarcus Robinson go from outcast players by their former teams, to crucial, successful players in Los Angeles. Dotson specifically has been talked about as one of the best right guards in the entire league this season.

LA holds their destiny in their own hands, win the next two weeks and they are in the playoffs. However, postseason berth aside, one thing is clear - Sean McVay should be considered in the running for head coach of the year this season, and frankly, is one of the best head coaches in team history already. It will be interesting to see if he ends up going down as the greatest Rams coach ever, considering he is still the youngest head coach in the entire league, and looks to have plenty of coaching ahead of him - especially after recommitting to Los Angeles this offseason.
