passer rating differential says a lot

December 01, 2020 05:22AM
This is considered by many analytics people as one of the best predictive measures of what teams are and how far they might go. It is simply the difference between your offense's passer rating and what your defense is allowing.

Among the NFC through week 12:

New Orleans +20.4
Green Bay +19.2
Seattle +14.6
Rams +13.8
Minnesota +6.7
Arizona +5.8
Tampa +0.4
San Francisco -0.2
Washington -3.3
Carolina -3.7
Chicago -7.7
Detroit -9.7
Atlanta -10.2
NY Giants -15.0
Dallas -17.5
Philadelphia -23.0

And in the AFC:
Pittsburgh +29.3
Kansas City +28.9
Las Vegas +15.2
Tennessee +13.3
Miami +10.7
Buffalo +10.2
Indianapolis +8.4
Houston +6.8
LA Chargers +3.1
Baltimore +0.9
Cleveland -1.4
Cincinnati -7.4
New England -19.0
Jacksonville -22.4
Denver -23.2
NY Jets -34.5

Looks about right for the most part, doesn't it? Just one data point but a good one I think. Another that shows the Rams are a top 8-10 (7th here) team but quite a ways away from the top 4. Arizona, by this measure, is 14th.

For what it's worth....
