Will Rams D be even more effective with addition of A’Shawn Robinson?

The Los Angeles Rams feature one of the NFL’s best defenses in 2020, the reward of being able to retain Aaron Donald (not so easy for every team to do considering situations like that of Khalil Mack and the Raiders) and acquire Jalen Ramsey to anchor that side of the football. The Rams rank second in points and yards allowed and may be the toughest teams to pass against specifically because of Donald’s pass rush and Ramsey’s coverage skills.

And yet it seems possible, if not fair, to say that LA’s most talented defensive grouping will be on the field this Sunday when they host the Seattle Seahawks.

Head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Monday that he expects both safety Jordan Fuller and nose tackle A’Shawn Robinson to be available in this week’s game. Fuller hasn’t played since being injured against the Washington Football Team in Week 5 and Robinson has yet to suit up for Los Angeles after signing a three-year contract in the offseason. Robinson nearly opted out of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic but his agent worked out a deal that allowed him to be able to return midseason and that allowed his contract to toll another year.

Fuller’s presence should mean a decrease in playing time for 2019 second round pick Taylor Rapp and Robinson’s debut will push Sebastian Joseph-Day to a reserve role.

This will mean that the Rams secondary is Ramsey-John Johnson-Fuller-Troy Hill-Darious Williams and their defensive line is Aaron Donald-Michael Brockers-Robinson. Meanwhile, rookie linebacker Terrell Lewis has seen his playing time increase amid his own return from injury and that could prove to have the biggest impact of all if Lewis is as good as the Rams were hoping when they picked him in the third round.

Can LA be even better in the second half of the season? Right now, they at least have a few more options.
