Interesting take on McVay’s approach to the Giants game post by an aeneas1...

Here’s aeneas1...

SO WHAT WENT ON IN THE GIANT'S GAME?

after 2018 playoff game against the cowboys, both gurley and cj were asked about mcvay's surprising run-first game plan, a run-first game plan that led to 270+ rushing yards, and both responded that this wasn't the game plan at all, that instead the rams simply had early success running the ball so they stuck with it.

this seems to be the case for 2020 season - the rams had early success running the ball in the first three games so that was their game plan against the giants, they decided to just stick with it.

thing is, the giants entered the game with the 7th ranked rush defense (ypc), and now rank 4th best after holding the rams to a meager 2.52 yards per carry, which is the 7th lowest rush average of the 63 games (126 teams) played so far this season.

the other thing is, the giants entered the game with a bottom 3rd pass defense (ypa and qb rating) and arguably the worst offense in the league - through week 3 the giants had averaged just 13 offensive points per game and scored a total, a total, of just 3 offensive tds.

yet mcvay opted to come out running the ball - and when he opted to throw, it was dink and dunk down the field... the result was 12+ play drives that consumed 7+ minutes when successful, a dream come true for a team with an offense that can't score.

so why did we see this from mcvay? why did he choose to attack a team with a bad pass defense, a team that can't score, by running the ball and throwing short all day? a strategy that was bound to result in a close game?

seems apparent that mcvay simply does not trust his pass pro at this point, and has schemed accordingly, has done everything possible through the first 4 games to put his oline in a position to succeed on passing plays, by running a bunch to set up play-action, by throwing short a bunch, by rolling out, moving the pocket, bootlegging, and throwing screens.

but at some point, i would think, the rams are going to have to show that they can move the ball vertically, consistently, which will require the oline to hold their blocks longer - they flashed this capability in the second half against the bills, it would be nice to see them build on it.
