What is the NFL's policy regarding pain killers?

If playing will not exacerbate the injury then pain killer injections are ok? They're ok at all times? I don't know.

Obviously I'm thinking of Akers. Not a doctor but I can't help but thinking a cartilage tear from the ribs CAN be made worse by playing? - JamesJM
