Rams 250th pick Tremayne Anchrum: Floor and Ceiling

Tremayne Anchrum

A Rams 2020 NFL Draft provided 9 new rookies: What is the floor/ceiling of new rookie addition Clemson OT Tremayne Anchrum?

With the 250th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the LA Rams selected 6-foot-2 314-pound Tremayne Anchrum, offensive tackle, out of Clemson. While he was the right tackle in college, his height and arm size are more typical of an NFL offensive interior lineman. Since the Rams announced him as a guard in the draft we will look at him as such. By watching his college play we can project to see what he can become. First, let’s look at his basic attributes. Then looking at we know we can use it to project a comp for both their floor and ceiling.

Basic Attributes

-Very athletic and can pull

-Weak against strong rushers

-Pass blocking is just ok and has a tendency to be pushed back

-Great run blocker and seems to find his block

Ceiling-Gabe Jackson

At best Anchrum would be close to Gabe Jackson. While in physical measurements, Jackson is just a bit bigger and weighs a little more, their arm length is the same and their hand size is comparable. Their traits are similar too. Both are athletic for the guard position, great while blocking in space, and have been known to pull on run plays. Hand play can be a weakness in the passing game and with their shorter hand sizes if either losses that they’re more than likely to lose their blocks.

Floor-Jamil Demby

At the worst, his floor should be Jamil Demby, good enough to fight for a roster spot but be stuffed near the bottom of a depth chart. Hand play gets worse as they face better competition than they did in college. Despite his solid string of starts in college, the transition from tackle to guard will provide a steep learning curve. As long as he focuses on guard, and guard alone, he may meet the challenge.

Final Projection

I think Anchrum and Demby will compete against each other for a final roster spot. He is more likely to play as a depth player. The Rams got good depth last draft with Bobby Evans and David Edwards last year. With solid starter and good performances out of starters Austin Corbett and Austin Blythe, the depth chart will be hard to move up. It is for this reason I have him as a depth player for the time being.

At this point, it’s all speculation about just how good you think Tremayne Anchrum will be. Since there is plenty of time, we can revisit this assessment after we have more evidence. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section as well. At the very least we are sure to have a roster battle in the offensive line room this offseason.
