RamsWire: Sean McVay says Goff Has Got to Make Better Decisions

Sean McVay on Jared Goff: 'He's got to make better decisions'
By: Cameron DaSilva | 24 minutes ago

There isn’t one single reason the Los Angeles Rams were embarrassed by an injury-riddled Philadelphia Eagles team at the Coliseum on Sunday. JoJo Natson’s fumble on a fourth-quarter punt return was costly, the secondary’s blown coverage allowed a huge gain and the run defense had trouble stopping Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles.

However, Jared Goff’s play may have been the biggest reason for L.A.’s struggles and eventual loss. For the third straight game, he posted a sub-70 passer rating and had at least one interception. For the second game in a row, he didn’t throw a single touchdown pass, just the second time in his career he’s done that.

There’s no denying the fact that he’s been off since the Rams’ Week 12 bye – he has one touchdown and seven interceptions in his last three games – and even Sean McVay isn’t excusing his quarterbacks’ play. The coach admitted Goff has to take better care of the football.

“He did a good job continuing to compete and that’s what you love about Jared. But there’s some things that we all got to be better,” McVay said. “He’s got to make better decisions, especially when we end up falling out underneath the center on third-and-1. You know, sometimes the only play is to just eat it, take that sack and let’s go ahead and punt it right there. But he’s trying to make plays, we learn from all of our mistakes, and that’s players, coaches alike. But there’s certainly some things we can look at, and we’ve got to be better.”

The third-and-1 play McVay referred to was Goff’s second interception of the game. It was undoubtedly his worst of the season, inexplicably trying to get rid of the ball after tripping on John Sullivan and falling to the ground.

It wasn’t his best moment.

There’s no excuse for Goff trying to throw that pass, given the situation. It was third-and-1 and regardless of whether he threw it incomplete or took a sack, the Rams were going to punt.

McVay couldn’t hide his disappointment in Goff’s decision-making and can only hope that it improves in the final two weeks of the season.
