A nice recent Seahawk drafting post by Avenger Ram...

Here’s Avenger Ram...

TWAS BAD DRAFTING KILLED THE BEAST (OR... HOW THE SEAHAWKS CAN BE A CAUTIONARY TALE FOR THE RAMS)
I've heard the same analysis from many commentators...

"The Rams' window is limited because they'll ultimately have to pay Jared Goff."

Yesterday, I heard at least two people try to prove this point by citing the Seahawks, who have declined since they signed Russell to a big contract.

But there's more to it than just that. Here is a look at the Seahawks draft picks in Rounds 1-3 in the 5 drafts since the selected Wilson:

2013 Christine Michael (2) – not on team
2013 Jordan Hill (3) – not on team
2014 Paul Richardson (2) – not on team
2014 Justin Britt (2) - STARTER
2015 Frank Clark (2) - STARTER
2015 Tyler Lockett (3) -STARTER
2016 German Ifedi (1) - STARTER
2016 Jarran Reed (2) - STARTER
2016 C.J. Prosise (3) – 3rd team/injured
2016 Nick Vanette (3) - STARTER
2016 Rees Odhiambo (3) – not on team
2017 Malik McDowell (2) – not on team
2017 Ethan Pocic (2) – STARTER
2017 Shaquill Griffin (3) - STARTER
2017 Delano Hill (3) – 3rd team
2017 Nazair Jones (3) – 2nd team
2017 Amara Darbo (3) – 3rd team/injured
2018 Rashaad Penny (1) – 3rd team
2018 Rasheem Green (2) – 2nd team

8 starters
2 second team
4 third team or injured
5 not on team

That's not a great track record. In fact, of the 8 starters, I'd say that zero are Pro Bowl players and some (particularly OL Britt, Ifedi and Pocic) are below average players.

That's where the cautionary comes in.

Yes, the Rams will have to pay Goff.
Yes, the Rams will not be able to "pay everyone" in the long run.

But if this team is going to be sustained, it will be because they are able to fill key roles with players on rookie contracts.

So far, its been pretty promising, if you ask me. Cooper Kupp and John Johnson are both quality starters obtained in last year's draft. The jury's still out on the 2018 draft, but there are some players who look like they have potential.

The Seahawks seem to have gone for quantity over quality in the draft, as they frequently traded down only to get middling players. The Rams need to find a few above-average starters in the next couple of drafts. That is what will allow them to sustain excellence.
