Michael Brockers is 'really comfortable' with being moved around D-line

The Los Angeles Rams run a 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips, but it’s not your traditional odd-man front. There are several aspects of a 4-3 scheme in it, particularly when it comes to the defensive line.
Flexibility is key for the Rams’ D-linemen, which came into play last season. Michael Brockers kicked outside from nose tackle to defensive end, a position he hadn’t played since high school. He thrived in his new role at 5-technique, and he’s prepared to do the same in Year 2 at that spot.
With Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh next to him on the defensive line, Phillips has endless options with his stud trio. Suh at defensive end, Brockers at the nose and Donald at 3-technique? No problem. Donald and Suh out wide at defensive end with Brockers shading the center? Absolutely doable.
Phillips has said he’s going to move his players all around the front, which Brockers has no problem with.
“Really comfortable because that’s what you prepare for when you play left and right, and you’ve been playing nose, and 3-[technique], and 5-[technique] over these seven years,” he said, via the Rams’ official site. “You’re kind of prepared for everything. So for us, it’s a challenge learning both sides, learning to rush from both sides. So I think it’ll help us in the long run. People won’t know what packages we’re in.”
Keeping opposing offenses on their heels with mixed and matched defensive fronts will be a big part of Phillips’ plan this season, it seems. With so much uncertainty at the linebacker position – both inside and outside – the Rams will have to generate pressure from the inside.
Fortunately, they have three players capable of doing just that. The Rams should rank among the league’s best when it comes to production from the defensive line, assuming Donald returns in a timely manner.
