It might be Jeff Fisher’s only chance to once again be a head coach.

None of the seven NFL teams that changed coaches this offseason even talked to the man who led the Tennessee Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV. However, he seems to be exactly what they want in the Alliance of American Football, a spring league set to debut in 2019.

The Sporting News reported this week that the AAF intends to hire former NFL coaches to run the eight franchises, which will play a 10-game season and will feature players who failed to make NFL rosters in the preceding season.

Fisher, Steve Spurrier, Mike Singletary and others are among those identified as having the requisite experience as well as the desire — presumed or acknowledged — to lead a team again.

Fisher’s career record as an NFL head coach is 173-165-1 in 16-plus seasons with the Titans/Oilers and four-plus seasons with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. He is tied with Dan Reeves for the most losses by a head coach in NFL history and is 12th in all-time wins.

At 60 years old, Fisher undoubtedly is healthy enough to do the job, particularly because the AAF season will be a fraction of the NFL’s. Plus, he reportedly planned to return to coaching in 2018 following a year out of the game, an effort that failed to materialize when he got no interest.

It certainly didn’t help that Fisher was fired with three games remaining in 2016 when the Rams were 4-9, and then that same team went 11-5 and won the NFC West in 2017 under Sean McVay.

Former NFL executive Bill Polian is one of the creators of the AAF. The league’s front-office staff includes former players Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward and Justin Tuck as well as former NFL executive J.K. McKay.

Reportedly, the mandate to hire proven NFL coaches (initially, at least) is to add to the credibility of the product. The AAF already has a national television deal in place with CBS and CBS Sports Network.

The Sporting News said the coaches could earn as much as $500,000 per season. For someone in Fisher’s spot, it could be a good opportunity to ease back into the game and possibly even create another NFL opportunity for himself — just like the players would like to do.
