Top draft targets by position

March 11, 2018 12:26PM
A service I subscribe to has been pretty accurate over the years in talent evaluation for the NFL draft. So a quick look at some post-combine rankings and notes that are at least fun to read. Each tier designates or projects a BPA round but obviously there will be risers and sliders. These opinions are not mine but a condensed version of the scouting reports. I hope you enjoy it, took awhile to put together.

OFFENSE
QB
1
Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma- A potential Russel Wilson. A runner with a strong accurate arm and a gamer attitude. Short but gutsy.
Josh Rosen, UCLA- Safe pick, has all the intangibles but some off field issues (?). A Matt Ryan type
Sam Darnold, USC- Only 2 years at USC, great pocket awareness but inconsistent, forces his passes at times.

2
Lamar Jackson, Louisville- Runs like Vick but not a great pocket passer. Quick release but mediocre accuracy.
Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma St.- Raw, not great accuracy. A project.
Josh Allen, Wyoming- Great upside and very accurate passer but...not much else. Not a great decision maker but had a good combine.

RB
1
Saquon Barkley, Penn St- Best player in the draft. Patient, great lateral move and can fly, good hands, 3 down back. Reminds me of Gurley
Derrius Guice, LSU- 5-10, 224 lbs, power with moves in open field. Workload runner but knee issues are a concern.
Ronald Jones II, USC- Electric, good twitch, a Jamaal Charles type but probably more a change of pace back
Sony Michel, Georgia- 3-down back potential, great acceleration and first step, solid blocker with good hands

2
Nick Chubb, Georgia- 5-11, 227 power back but never really used as a pass catcher. Knee issue also
Royce Freedman, Oregon- 5-11, 230 downhill runner, consistent but not great in pass protection or as a receiver
John Kelly- Tennessee- 5-10, 216 Duke Johnson type but great hands, more a passing down back

3
Kerryon Johnson, Auburn- Not particularly great at any one thing except pass protection but solid overall skills
Rashad Penny, San Diego St- Workhorse in college but probably a career back-up in the pros

WR
1
Calvin Ridley, Alabama- Great route runner but also older than most at 24. Smart but thin at 6-1, 188.
James Washington, Oklahoma St- Big guy with deceptive speed. Strong run blocker with great hands
Michael Gallup, Colorado St- Great combine, 6-1, 205, super burst off the line, hard to contain in a zone D
Christian Kirk, Texas A&M- Possession slot WR, solid hands but not as fast as many
Courtland Sutton, SMU- 6-3, 218, long arms but not great hands, inconsistent but decent potential

2
DJ Moore, Maryland- 6-0, 215 good hands, great in open field, possible slot WR in pros, 4.4 40 at combine was surprising
Anthony Miller, Memphis- 5-11, 190 Slot WR that is inconsistent with poor hands
Keko Coutee, Texas Tech- 5-10, 181, quick and slippery slot WR but small
Auden Tate, Florida St- 6-5, 228, 4.69 40 at combine is slow but he's big, a good run blocker and tough for jump balls

3
Dante Pettis, Washington- Solid hands, decent speed but not a great route runner. Potential as a punt returner too.
Simmie Cobbs Jr., Indiana- 6-3, 220 solid hands but a lazy route runner. Good potential, high risk
Equanimeous St. Brown, Notre Dame- 6-5, 214, very athletic, long arms, good route runner but very lanky.
Marcell Ateman, Oklahoma St- Possession WR, slow off the line but good long speed but built like Mike Evans with decent hands.
DJ Chark, LSU- 6-3, 199, ran 4.34 40 at combine, good hands, deep threat but skinny.

TE
1
Dallas Goedert, S. Dakota St- 6-4, 250, hard to tackle but inconsistent hands, slow off the line but a solid blocker
Mark Andrews, Oklahoma- 6-5, 250, good route runner, decent hands but not much of a blocker yet.

2
Hayden Hurst, S. Carolina- 6-4, 250, but 25 years old. Great athlete played RB and WR too. Minor league pitcher for Pirates.
Mike Gesicki, Penn St- Raw, not a great blocker but high ceiling potential

3
Ian Thomas, Indiana- Thick guy, great blocker, old school TE, slow but steady.
Troy Fumagali, Wisconsin- 6-6, hustles, very willing and competent blocker, not a great receiver

OL
1
Mike McGlinchey, Notre Dame- 6-7, 310, very strong, equally good at pass pro and run blocking, should be outstanding LOT in NFL
Quenton Nelson, Notre Dame- Strong, very aggressive 325 lb guard, best in the draft.
Connor Williams, Texas- 6-5, 296 is small for an OT but a very skilled blocker. May end up at OG in the pros
Will Hernandez, UTEP- 6-3, 340 beast, very strong, will need to become a bit more aggressive but solid skill at an OG
Frank Ragnow, Arkansas- 6-5, 312 C, solid line calls, equally skilled in pass and run blocking

2
James Daniels, Iowa- C, Gained 10 lbs before combine but needs more (306 now), very athletic, good run blocker.
Kolton Miller, UCLA- Solid run blocker at OT, quick, a little thin, slightly above average
Braden Smith, Auburn- 6-6, 315 lbs, played both OT & OG, aggressive but needs more weight, gained almost 15 for combine
Billy Price, Ohio St- C, Not as strong as most but a very skilled run blocker, injury at combine pushes him out of first round.
Isaiah Wynn, Georgia- 6-2, 282, played OT but too small for it in pros, will be an OG, aggressive and quick, needs more weight too
Tyrell Crosby, Oregon- 6-5, 310 project at OT, strong and quick but not yet a great pass blocker

3
Desmond Harrison, W. Georgia- OT, punishing run blocker but small at 292, 4.9 40 at combine, off field concerns. A project.
Cody O'Connell, Washington St- 6-7, 351 OG but better in pass pro than run blocking. Can get confused by rushers, another project
Coleman Shelton, Washington- C, 6-3, 298 better in pass pro than run blocking too. Needs more weight and strength
Brian O'Neill, Pittsburgh- Former TE moved to OT his last year. Good athlete but lanky, needs weight or moved back to TE
Martinas Rankin, Mississippi- 6-4, 308, was an OT, will be a OG in NFL. Skilled but probably not a starter
Orlando Brown, Oklahoma- 6-7, 340 with long arms but low awareness. One of the worst combines in NFL history knocks him way down
Chukwuma Okorafor, W. Michigan- 6-6, 340, hard to move OT but very raw. Another project
Austin Corbett, Nevada- 6-4, 306 OT that will move to OG. Needs to be more aggressive, not a great run blocker yet.

Dorance Armstrong Jr., Kansas- Small at 257 but very fast, may end up at OLB, good recognition but a 'tweener' in the pros

1
Vita Vea Washington- 6-4, 330 lb beast at DT, larger version of Ngata, fast, high motor guy. Future all-pro potential
