McVay keeps cool after apparent rough comments from predecessor Mike Martz

THOUSAND OAKS — It often seems as though Coach Sean McVay has a big-screen personality, but the Rams did not hire him to star in a buddy movie with quarterback Jared Goff.

McVay got torched Tuesday when an excerpt from an upcoming book quoted former Rams coach Mike Martz as ridiculing McVay, his lack of experience and his relationship with Goff. In a subsequent radio interview, Martz claimed the book quotes had been “embellished.”

Martz, the offensive coordinator for the Rams’ Super Bowl victory in 2000, and their head coach for the Super Bowl loss two years later, reportedly took issue with McVay (now age 31), who in January became the youngest coach in NFL history.

“What is he, a couple of months older than Jared?” the Martz excerpt read. “They hired a buddy for Jared. The NFL has nothing to do with being the friend or the buddy of the quarterback. You’ve got to coach them and work them hard with respect. But buddy? And this guy is a quarterback expert? An offensive expert? Wait a minute while I puke.

“Right, he’s going to be able to teach and handle and guide Jared through tough times because of all of his expertise and knowledge? Right. I’m not going to drink that Kool-Aid.”

That would be an awful lot of misquoting by the author, Thomas George, who previously wrote for The New York Times. In an ESPN radio interview Tuesday, Martz said he told the author only that the Rams probably wanted to hire someone closer to Goff’s age (22) for communication purposes.

“But all of that other garbage, I would never say something like that,” Martz said.

George, whose book is called “Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks,” stood behind the quotes in a statement Tuesday, according to NBCSports.com.

“At no point in a 48-minute phone interview on April 21st for ‘Blitzed’ did Mike Martz request any off the record comments or restrain from offering his strong opinions on a variety of NFL quarterbacking subjects, including Rams head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Jared Goff,” the statement read. “His quotes in today’s book excerpts on SBNation are completely, 100 percent accurate.”
