Colin Cowherd made a very interesting point today about WRs

April 28, 2017 09:44AM
Cowherd pointed this out:

Only 1 WR taken in the first round since 2010 has wound up in a Superbowl. Great WRs don't win championships. If they did, then Julio Jones, Megatron, AJ, and Fitzgerald would have multiple rings.

And, smaller speed WRs in the winter usually don't perform as well as possession WRs and good hands, good route, WRs and TEs tend to also do better. Often because the game gets a lot more physical the in the 2nd half of the season, and as the cold and blustery weather sets in speed gets diminished, the ball gets stiff and hard, and by then smaller, speed WRs are a bit bruised up and their speed is hampered.

Made the same point I've often made: you need a variety of good WRs who can do different things. But you don't need ANY great WRs, and the concept of the #1 WR who must be paid special attention to I think is outdated.

You can get a good WR in almost any round. What matters most is good adjustments, good hands and good route running. Speed is not as important as those two factors. Speed of course is always a good thing; but it is not THE thing.

This is going to make the Rams draft this year an indicator of whether McVay buys into this line of thinking, or some other line of thinking.
If he goes CB, S, or OL at 37 and WR later, then he does.
If he goes Samuel, for instance, then he probably doesn't.

Looking forward to finding out.

Since 2010? What does that mean?

max273April 28, 2017 09:50AM

  Missing your point.

Depends on what you mean by "#1"

zn188April 28, 2017 10:46AM

You can call it that if you want, but that's not what the media means

RockRam159April 28, 2017 01:06PM

  I know

So teams shouldn't draft WRs like J. Jones or AJ Green?

I didn't say that and he didn't either.

RockRam203April 28, 2017 10:33AM

How'd that work in 1999? Nm
