The Rams hired a coach who favors receiver work, then saw their most regular outside receivers leave in free agency. PFF shows why they need to address that.

In 2016, new Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, then with Washington, had his offense run with the 11 personnel for 758 snaps in 2016, or 71 percent of the team’s overall snaps. That means he had 3 WRs, 1 TE, and 1 RB on the field for a given play. The NFL average for 11 personnel in 2016 was 59 percent of snaps. The Rams have plenty of inside experience, but need to add help on the outside to be successful.

The Rams’ primary outside receivers in 2016 are no longer with the team. Kenny Britt lined up outside on 87 percent of his passing snaps and Brian Quick did so for 67. With their departure, the Rams lose over 800 snaps from the outside.

Robert Woods comes from a Bills offense that was in 11 personnel for only 45 percent of the Bills’ snaps. He saw two passes dropped and zero touchdowns scored when lining up on the outside.

Tavon Austin was second among WRs in drop rate. Average a drop on 13.43 catchable passes thrown his way. Out of 9 total drops, 5 came when lined up outside.

The three projected starters as of now combined for 51 receptions, 509 yards, and seven drops from the outside in 2016.
