Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson helped by McVay's rise more than CousinsJohn Keim

One of his biggest fans just landed a head coaching job. Yet it won’t provide a whole lot of help for boosting Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins’ value this offseason. But it should help two of the Redskins' free-agent receivers.
New Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay remained firmly in Cousins’ corner even when he struggled in 2014, showing flashes of excellent play only to sabotage them with costly mistakes. McVay repeatedly would say that Cousins could become an excellent quarterback.
He’s watched Cousins’ game develop, having been with the Redskins since they drafted him. He worked closely with Cousins during the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator. No coach knows Cousins’ game better.
Yet the Rams have a young quarterback. Less than a year ago, they traded five picks and swapped first-round selections to land the top overall choice, Jared Goff. You don’t make that sort of investment only a year later to make a big one in a different guy.
So it doesn’t matter how big a fan McVay is of Cousins; his value won’t be helped by having McVay as a head coach elsewhere. Cousins, of course, is a pending free agent and there’s still debate in the organization about the direction they need to go with him -- whether signing a long-term deal or using the franchise tag again. The former is their most desirable option. Regardless, the more potential suitors he has, the better for Cousins.
If Kyle Shanahan somehow lands the San Francisco job, then Cousins would be helped. The 49ers lack a quarterback; Shanahan remains a big fan of Cousins.
Short of that, however, Cousins’ value won’t be increased by having supportive coaches in other markets.
However, it could help receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, both of whom also are free agents. And perhaps tight end Vernon Davis. The Redskins have been talking to Davis’ side for some time and he made it clear how much he liked playing in Washington, his hometown. But McVay also was a big fan of Davis.
