Getting Ready for Goff
November 17, 2016 by Pat Kirwan, Jim Miller

So the time has finally come. Jared Goff, the #1 overall pick in the 2016 draft will finally make his NFL debut against the Dolphins on Sunday at the LA Coliseum. He’s the eighth rookie to play in a game this season, and will try to become the first #1 overall pick to win his NFL debut since David Carr did it with Houston in 2002.

Even though we’ve been looking forward to seeing Goff, HC Jeff Fisher was ultimately smart to wait. There are questions about his physical readiness, and whether the Rams can actually protect him. Case Keenum was sacked once every 15 attempts. You can expect Goff’s number to be closer to once every 12 attempts, and unfortunately, the run game has not gone well and won’t be the support system the team had hoped for.

It doesn’t seem he’ll get much help from the game plan either. OC Rob Boras has shown himself to be pretty unimaginative when it comes to putting the weekly plan together. The Rams align in static formations and are predictable on runs in terms of personnel and formations, which is a big part of the reason for Todd Gurley’s struggles this season.

We expect the game plan for Goff won’t be too expansive this week. It will include basic curls, mirror routes, play action, draws and screens, and they will rely on the defense to win games. This team has scored just 29 points (10 points per game) over the last three weeks. We won’t be judging Goff on wins, but more on readiness, composure, play on 3rd down, the range of his arm, and how he adjusts to being under center. Anyone looking for anything more than that will be disappointed. Goff could be in for a rough start.
