Why oh why did they go for td on 4th down at end of game?

No one is really taking about it and with the horrific onside kick execution it wouldn't have mattered, but the go for it on 4th down play was one of the stranger things I've seen called. Did Jeff lose track of the score, timeouts, time remaining, all 3? They needed a touchdown and a field goal. If that 4th down play is incomplete its game over.
