Pass Interference has become a "play" in the NFL

September 28, 2016 02:49AM
One of the advantages of passing the ball downfield, and doing it fairly often, is because of the close way PI is being called in the passing era NFL.
As former player/announcers regularly point out, it is very difficult for CBs and S's to keep their disciple when defending the pass, and it is nearly impossible for balls thrown slightly short or on back shoulder throws not to interfere if one hopes to break it up.

In other words, the League has intentionally given WRs and passing teams an advantage.

The PI call against Tampa near the end of the game was huge (and it wasn't even close, it was a clear PI). It might seem like a "cheap' way to get your team out of hole, but it works quite often in the modern NFL.

Fisher and the Rams need to use it more, and hopefully when Goff with his penchant to push the ball down the field gets to play, we'll see more of it.
