My last - and current - Mac was about $4500, or so and that was 5-6 years ago.. I do intensive video, photo editing, 3D animation, virtual reality and all that - although no virtual reality on the Mac, yet.. Hopefully Mac will have implemented that enough that I'll trust doing it on a Mac when I get my next one.. and, yeah, I hafta get a maxed out processor, RAM, video card, high res screen - did I tell you my dog broke my 27" Retina screen? Knocked it over and cracked the front glass, and, of course, mine was the first model that you couldn't easily replace the front glass, so I just hafta use it with a crack down the right side.. Beagles!
So, this one will hold me until I start doing VR on the Mac at home - right now I have a PC laptop that I take home to work on VR.. Geez you could easily launch a space shuttle with that thing.. but its nothing compared to the BEAST I'm getting set up right now in my office.. Over 35 terabytes hard drive, more RAM than I can count.. takes TWO AC plugs just for the tower.. water cooled.. crazy... I think they paid $20K for it.. but it did come with a mouse and a keyboard lol
