Well I've following this for a while and for a long time the active scientists themselves have said in print that what you get is a picture of the accretion disk, with the black hole itself you just get the shadow caused by the event horizon. But yeah that's what you get when you take a picture of a black hole. A shadow surrounded by a glowing accretion disk.
And it's even more amazing than that. You follow the real story closer and it gets more strange.
