It actually has an Edgar Allan Poe resonance, but that wouldn't be in the 50s.
I now know the answer. . . won't say anything. . . but that was apparently a West coast thing. Us midwesterners weren't exposed to it.
That said. . . it reminds me of one of my favorite expressions. . .
