Stumbled on this one earlier today... can't remember when I first heard it, a long time ago for sure, and since I already 'knew' the specifics when it was said in the following manner it caught me by surprise.
"Cleopatra's time on earth is closer to the founding of McDonald's than it is to the building of the Pyramids". Sure, if you've studied history at all you saw the math.. but were you really 'aware' of that fact?
Here's another... Christopher Plummer, and Martin Luther King... are/were the same age as Anne Frank. Now be honest... do you put Anne Frank in the same era as Chris and Martin?
Well, I'll finish with one more because I've bored you enough. If you condensed the age of the earth into one year man first appears on Dec. 31st at 11:35pm. - JamesJM
Here's another one. Chosen completely at random. People think of the Roman Empire and assume, as often as not, that all the major structures were made of marble. Not so. Their major building material was concrete. That's right, cement. But they perfected concrete to the point where they could build structures on the coastline and jutting into water that not only were not eroded by water, the material actually got stronger over time by being in or near water. The knowledge of how to mix concrete with that kind of strength and durability was lost after the empire faded, and only recently have people begun to figure out the Roman recipe for making concrete that is THAT strong and durable. That's right, many centuries later, and we are still behind the classical era Romans when it comes to our knowledge of how to make long-lasting concrete.
