That's typical..

of a lot of the older movies.. I guess the whole "collect screen used items from famous movies" hadn't taken off yet and, unfortunately, like you mention, major props rotted away.. like the mechanical sharks in Jaws (I think one still exists) and whatnot.. stuff like that today would probably go for millions had somebody preserved it over the years..
