I liked Zuerlein too, however, injury is a concern because of the way he kicks, his back is always flaring up and that would concern me down the road. Now I agree that they are going to need a viable option at kicker and I'm not sure I would like a rookie here even if it's Rodrigo Blankenship (Georgia) or Tyler Bass (Georgia Southern) the latter starring in the Senior Bowl.
IMO, Austin MacGinnis is someone I would take a long look at, he's young, has a good leg and seems to have improved since his college years at Kentucky....Rams have had mixed results with rookies over the years as Frank Corral was solid, Chuck Nelson not very good, Steve McLaughlin was a disaster and Greg Zuerlein did not disappoint and was a weapon. .Hopefully new special team coach John Bonamego has a plan because John Fassel sure did.
Well said, den. I’m intrigued by MacGinnis, too.
Coach Bonamego can sure earn our trust and respect if he comes up with a good kicker this offseason, that’s for sure. That’s Job One for him.
For the record, I support the decision to move on from GZ. As you point out, the way he kicks puts great stress on his back and I expect his injury woes will continue and probably worsen. Sooooo...
