Debate vs Running vs Passing

January 20, 2020 08:39AM
Wanted to address the issue with passing teams being looked at more favorably than running teams. The reason analytics prefers passing is because passing generates a larger yards per play than rushing the ball. For example, passing on first down earns over seven yards per play while rushing is at 4.4.

The key points to me are: 1. Do what you are most productive at; and 2. Be unpredictable.

The niners are an excellent running team. Without looking at the numbers I would expect their yards per rush on first down is substantially higher than the average. If their passing game is less effective than average perhaps running the ball is the best choice for them.

Also, when evaluating best passing teams I think it is extremely important to avoid garbage time numbers.

Fwiw. I would not resign Henry to anything above 8 million per.
