In 2018 the Rams had 703 passing plays. Of those, 666 of them were 11 personnel (94%) 28 plays were 1 RB 2 TE sets and a handful of 4 and 5 WR sets.
they had 550 running plays. 447 out of 11 personnel (81%) 77 12 personnel (14%) and then a handful of 13 personnel.
So the Rams led the NFL in 11 personnel in 2018. That is nothing new or earth shattering.
Move into 2019:
Pass plays: 649 total plays. 11 personnel - 536 times (83%), 12 personnel - 75 times (12%), 10 personnel (4 wr) 31 times (5%), 13 personnel - 4 times, and 3 runs out of 4 and 5 wr sets.
Run plays: 400 total plays. 11 personnel - 232 times (58%), 12 personnel - 144 (36%), 13 personnel -13 times (3%), 10 personnel - 10 times (3%)
So what does that mean? The Rams cut back from 11 personnel from 89% of the time in 2019 to 73% of the time in 2018 overall. The 2 TE personnel went up to 21% in 2019 from only 8% in 2018.
It does look like McVay is going to more 2 TE sets. Either out of necessity to help the OL or because of the 6-1 defenses they saw or just to give defenses a different look.
Out of curiosity, I looked at the 9ers run sets in 2019. THey ran out of 11 personnel 25% of the time, 12 personnel 23% and 21 personnel 32% and 22 personnel 16%. So they used a fullback when running 48% of the time and always had 1 TE.
The 9ers passed out of 11 personnel 57% of the time or within 1% of what the Rams passed from. They passed out of 12 or 21 personnel 39% of the time, the Rams passed out of 12 personnel 36% of the time.
So the Rams and 9ers as far as personnel groupings are eerily similar on passing plays. Where they differ is running the football and the reason the 9ers run 21 is because they have Kyle Juszczyk at FB, and frankly, he is hard to replicate.
Another thing about the Shanahan offense. He runs zone blocking. Its not about big uglies mauling you to death, he has built a nice OL that works well with 2 monster blockers at TE with Juszczyk and Kittle. So its not like the Rams have to retool their blocking scheme and personnel packages to match up with the 9ers, they are already there.
What I hope to see is more beef and nastiness at LG and OC. I would also love to see a H back more that can act like a TE or FB like what McVay had with Jordan Reed.
I have zero faith in Allen as a OC, I want someone tough as nails with some nasty. Give me the Ruiz kid from Michigan (who has played zone and power man) or Biadasz from Wisconsin who loves a good trench fight. Both are 6'-3" plus and 320 lbs.
I also want a nasty demeanored LG to replace Noteboom or Corbett. Neither are particularly nasty and Noteboom is due for a position change. Ben Bredeson from Michigan again has played in every OL scheme in 4 years and has 320 lb size on top of a real nice mean streak. And he took it to Alabama in the bowl game.
As far as an H-back type. Thaddeus Moss and Colby Parkinson come to mind. Esp Moss. Watch him block for LSU. He is nasty. Esp for his size. Maybe even a guy like Antonio Gibson from Memphis. A wr/rb hybrid at 6'-1" 225. catches, runs blocks, returner on ST. he could be a movable chess piece that could act like a H-back.
I'd also add a physical back like Lamical Perine to the roster to fight with henderson and Brown for carries.
