I don't think Hager is going to cut it.

I have the feeling that Matthews is set up to play a pretty varied role in terms of where he lines up and the subpackages they put him in. But it looks like mostly, he will be the strong side OLB.

I don;t think they want to rob peter to pay paul by moving him.

The MIKE spot amounts to a 2-down role. Odds are this defense will be in subpackage this year far more than in the base defense. So it remains to be seen how crucial the MIKE spot really is. BUT let's say Hager doesn't cut it. They actually have many choices left to promote a youngster, the way they did Johnson in 2017 when the guy starting ahead of him (Alexander) didn't cut it.

The prospects include Allen and Patrick.

So if Hager doesn't work out they could have a player in one of those 2.

But I doubt they take Matthews out of the role they built for him and make him take on more of a grunt role playing MIKE (while also just creating a hole at OLB at the same time).

AND...who knows. I'm just specularating.

.
