The Rams could be a great fit for recently released safety Glover Quin

The start of free agency is right around the corner, and a new name became available today that could be of potential interest to the Los Angeles Rams’ front office. It’s no secret that the Rams could use some help in their secondary, and with Lamarcus Joyner set to be a free agent, the team should kick the tires on recently released safety Glover Quin.

Quin was cut by the Lions on Friday in a cost-cutting move, but still has some left in the tank, and could be exactly what the Rams need. After franchise tagging him last year, it seems increasingly likely they will move on from Joyner. If they do, it’d leave a void at safety and Quin could be the perfect option.

The Lions released him because they were able to recoup nearly $8 million in cap savings, and they aren’t in any position to compete for a championship anyway. The Rams could potentially get him for much cheaper. Quin is 33 now and likely nearing the end of his career, and has never made it past the divisional round of the playoffs.

He could be attracted to the Rams if he’s looking for somewhere he can win and compete for a Super Bowl. Ndamukong Suh signed a contract with the Rams despite having more lucrative offers on the table, and Quin could do the same to chase a ring.

It also makes sense from a football perspective. The Rams are all-in on winning now, and general manager Les Snead hasn’t been hesitant to pursue veteran rentals in the past. The Rams can’t afford to go into next season with a young, inexperienced secondary and pairing Quin and Aqib Talib with the younger guys John Johnson III and Marcus Peters seems like a perfect fit.

Not only would he provide another veteran presence on defense, he’s still capable of playing at a high level. He still earned above average marks from Pro Football Focus this season, even as Detroit’s secondary got no help from a pass-rush that was one of the worst in the league.

Signing Quin to a cheap, short-term deal rather than giving Joyner the big contract he’s looking for would allow the Rams to have spend more of their resources locking up guys like Rodger Saffold who are also set to be free agents.

The Rams don’t want to be starting a rookie next to Johnson next year, so free agency seems like the way to go for Joyner’s replacement. A Quin-Johnson duo has the potential to be one of the best in the league, and the Rams should at the very least be making a phone call to Quin’s agent.
