I do have the impression McVay is not one for coach speak. I like his communication style. He seems like a high character, extremely hardworking, intelligent, good guy. I also see him as having been around the NFL long enough to know you don't mess with someone's money. You don't hurt the player's next contract. I wonder if there was some gamesmanship/acting in the talk of efforts to re-sign Sammy Watkins. Maybe others recall the details more clearly.
This is purely just my own speculation but I lean towards giving the front office credit here. Watkins was a #4 overall draft pick in the 2014 draft that they picked up with a 6th for a 2nd and EJ Gaines. They brought him in for a year to see if he could help turn the offense around. He did score 8 TDs and the offense did improve dramatically. It wasn't an ideal fit. The QB matters. They are not going to mess around with that position. They want the QB comfortable. They stepped up for Cooks with a 1st rounder and a big contract. Cooks has produced and has been a better fit. (Dance with my dogs in the nighttime) They got a 3rd back as a comp which they knew all along would mitigate the risk if things were not ideal.
It seems like a similar approach with Marcus Peters and Dante Fowler. Maybe the assessment is not complete on either of those players with the initial impression being below expectations on one and positive on the other. Hopefully with Talib the leader of the secondary back and Fowler adding a possible 2nd rusher the defense will improve.
It's been so much fun to be along for the ride as a fan this year.
